Multicultural Textiles & Cultural Appropriation
Description of Capstone Project
WGSN cites the increase of cultural patterns and textiles for 2016/17. What impact could fashion have on cultural diversity acceptance? Today, over 50% of Toronto’s population identify as a minority culture. The three major cultures influencing fashion design are African, South Asian, and First Nations, and they are becoming more stylized each season. Is there a way to reflect our cultural world throughout textiles without appropriating them? This capstone project will be discussing the intersection of culture and fashion in a post-modern multi-cultural society. I will be examining the projected future of this trend, and how it will differ from the recent past in terms of cultural appropriation in textiles and trends.
